Futuristic Ice Age thriller Snowpiercer could turn out to be the District 9 of 2013. Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s first English-language flick, like Neil Blombkamp’s thoughtful alien invasion from 2009, operates far outside the Marvel/DC/vampire/zombie nexus that inspires most big Hollywood spectacles.
Judging from a spare concept art teaser offered on the film’s Korean website uncovered by TFS, Joon-ho can be expected to extend his reach as the rare filmmaker who combines art house subtlety with killer suspense instincts.

Taking out the trash: Dumpster Dissection Reveals Compostable Conundrum

mrwmd:

By Abbie Beane

I’ve jumped in so many dumpsters and been shoulders deep in so many trash bags that people think I actually enjoy it. And I’m starting to believe them.

But those of us in the waste industry know that we’re not digging for solace, entertainment or a barely used beach umbrella —…

This is the best pack I have ever owned. It was 5 dollars in China! Makes me laugh errday #chinacrap #iwannagobacktochins

Something to aspire to

Sometimes I wonder why I am not doing something insane like this. It takes insane balls to risk your life so much on this stuff. He could literally not get conclusive results at all and throw his life away. But if he is able to pull this off, he could change industrial farming from the inside.

What I really like about this strategy is that it uses prizes as mechanism. It seems so stupid at first to have a race to an environmental goal, but then you realize it’s actually brilliant. Humans love races and competition. Its ok though, we just need to focus on this. Ikeda talks a little bit about this kind of things as well.

Overall, I am impressed and wish I could be doing more, sometimes it feels like I am just spinning my wheels.

Happy 40th Birthday Clean Water Act!!

Happy birthday to one of my top five favorite environmental acts! Read this short pdf for a history and a discussion on its significance, from a stellar research group.

“Having realized the limitations on pragmatic arguments, we have to go beyond that, immediately and routinely, and argue that one of the main reasons we shouldn’t eliminate half the biological diversity on this planet is that the universe will be a whole lot uglier, more boring, and more lonely. That’s not as much a tangible argument, but we need to make it tangible”
